The Arts
“The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.” The History Boys by Alan Bennett
I am passionate about the arts and creativity and think that the above quote sums up well one of the reasons why many of us are so attracted to them. It’s not just about entertainment – although there is a lot of that involved – it’s about connection. Be it a book, poem, piece of music, a film, a painting, a sculpture, a photograph, or something else, these things don’t just entertain us. They move us, make us think, heal us, help us to cope with life and increase our empathy and understanding towards others. Most importantly, they connect us to each other. The arts have healing powers, not just for the creator but for the viewer or listener. They show us, with every word, phrase, note, image, brushstroke or click, that we are understood and that we are not alone
I will share some of my thoughts on the arts here which I really hope you’ll enjoy.
