TikTok sensation, psychologist Dr Julie Smith, offers us a toolkit using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as her guide. It is an accessible and valuable book written in a normal, down to earth style. At heart, it’s an extended look at how thoughts, emotions, behaviour and physical sensations exist on a loop. Feeding off each other. Also how building self-awareness of our thoughts, and our state of being, gives us a better chance at managing all the things happening in our lives. 

Dr Smith looks at the specific areas of low mood, motivation, grief, self-doubt fear, stress and more. Each chapter closes with handy tips and  summary. 

I will highlight just one part in this review. The section on Anxiety. Try to buy the new extended version if you get the ebook as it has two extra chapters – 37 & 38 – on dealing with panic attacks. Dr Smith said she added these as so many people contacted her about these issues. She also includes an action plan to deal with anxiety in every day life. 

While this book does not replace therapy for those who need it, in the spirit of this website where we do all we can to help ourselves, this book can be a very valuable resource. The use of Journaling is highlighted. As is the habit of Gratitude. Spending a few moments out of each day to write down three things we feel grateful for. Reflecting on these things and doing this as a daily habit is invaluable.

With its many tools on offer – all outlined with kind, encouraging and supportive words – this book is a powerful resource for anyone needing help managing their lives and emotions. If CBT – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – is your thing, then this book is definitely for you.
